Monochromatic: Containing or using only one color.

This is a trend you can find a lot of celebrities sporting. Such as Zoe Saldana in a nice mix of grays and Chantel Valentene in her hot red blouse, and even hotter red skinnies. A hand full of designers had this trend walking down their runways for Spring 2012. Elie Saab, and Adam just to name a few.
When this trend first came to my attention, in all honesty I was a little more than shocked. I’m all for mismatching colors, and patterns, but that’s just it… For me it was all about mismatching, it had never crossed my mind to wear the same colors in different hues to complete an outfit (this is something that my aunt does to her younger daughter, and trust me it has never worked out.) Here’s the thing… its all about…..
presentation. It’s one thing to wear the same color from head to toe, but it turns into something completely different when you use texture, and pattern.
I’ve put together a sample of what a good monochromatic outfit looks like; it works in a cool and interesting way. You want to make sure people can distinguish each item of your outfit. I’ve paired a plaid button-down with the same blue as the blazer so the colors don’t blend completely. Having the skirt with a sheer tint to it, as well as the pleats, gives it texture. This gives a good base to then add different shades of blue. To keep the outfit interesting you can always use different colors of the same tone, with the accessories.
So in the end, when going monochromatic, its more about the mix of texture and pattern, and less about the mismatching of colors.
